Twitter are introducing something new to your home timeline: a recap of some of the top Tweets you might have missed from accounts you follow - while you were away.

Last year I posted a blog on What Twitter will look like in 2015 and this seems to be the first step towards a 'Twitter Algorithm', though my initial idea would be far more personalised and time/location based aswell.

Twitter has realised that a lot can happen while you’re on the go. To fill in some of those gaps, they will filter a few of the best Tweets you probably wouldn’t have seen otherwise, determined by engagement and other factors. So does this give rise to the importance of follower count to ensure your tweets have a higher chance of being displayed in the while you were away of your followers?

The new update will also work on the premise that if you check in now and then for a quick snapshot of what’s happening, you’ll see this recap more often, if you spend a lot of time on Twitter already you’ll see it less.

Ideally Twitter's goal is to help you keep up – or catch up – with your world, no matter how much time you spend on the network. This is definitely the first step in what will be an on-going evolution of the 'While you were away' feature without compromising the real time nature of Twitter, which is what we all love about it.

Recaps, marked with a “While you were away” heading, will begin to appear for all Twitter for iOS users today, and on our Android app and twitter.com soon
